This 7-day bicycle tour begins in Shantou, Guangdong province. This tour is designed as a moderate ride. Average daily cycling mileage will be about 45 miles (73 km). There will be No Support Vehicle - riders will carry their own gear in panniers on their bikes. This tour will visit both well-known and little-known sights and will appeal to those who have cultural, social and geographical interests.

On the night before the first day, your guide will meet you at your hotel and provide you with a briefing of the tour. On the first day, the group will cycle out of Shantou and up the southeast coast to Raoping near the Fujian/Guangzhou border.

The next day, the group will visit the South Mountain Temple in Zhao'an then ride onto Dongshan Island and visit the Wind Moving Rock stopping in the small town of Jiuzhen for the night.  On day third day, the group will cycle to Xiamen taking the ferry across the Xiamen Harbor to enter the city.

The the fourth day, we will explore Xiamen wandering around the warren of old streets around the harbor lined with the shop-houses. We will visit the Tang Dynasty 1,000 year-old Nanputuo Temple, Museum of Coins in 19th century British Consulate and spectacular seaside views from Sunlight Rock on Gulangyu Island, a place still covered with old colonial-era mansions.

On the fifth day, the group will cycle to Pinghe through the pear and loquat orchards common in this area  The next day, we will cycle to the village of Hongkeng in Yongding County where the unique earth buildings called "tulou." The group will spend the night in one of the "tulou".

On the last day, we will visit Chengqi Lou, the largest of the earth buildings. It is made up of three concentric circular buildings and is about 300 years old. This area around Hukeng town is a beautiful rural area and has many earth buildings of various shapes and sizes. These buildings are still lived in and are excellent examples of ecologically sustainable building design that survived from the past. and then return to Xiamen by vehicle, concluding the tour.

Accommodations will be basic Chinese hotels generally of the 1-3 star variety. A few times it may be necessary to use a no-star hotel.

The prices are for double occupancy rooms, and will vary depending on the number of people who participate.

Private room supplement: US$ Call/Email

This tour is limited to no more than eight people. This will permit more flexibility in the program and allow more spontaneity for taking photos or exploring villages along the way.

Prices include the following:

  1. Bilingual bicycle tour guide.
  2. All hotel room accommodations (double occupancy).
  3. Meals eaten as group (private meals, snacks and alcoholic beverages are not included).
  4. All group transportation costs (taxis, buses).
  5. All group entrance fees.
  6. A Rental Bike is available and includes bike, panniers, lock, raincape, gloves and helmet.

This will be a self-supported ride. This means that each rider will carry their luggage and alternative transportation (buses and trucks) will be used when necessary.

If you decide to do something on your own, you will be responsible for those costs.

Cost: Prices depend on the total number of people going on the tour and the time of year. Below are the price per person (pp) and quoted in US dollars (US$) for non-holiday periods*:

* Holiday Periods require a 30% surcharge to the basic price due to increased costs of hotels and transportation. Tours with overlapping dates will be prorated. These periods are: Chinese New Year; Labor Day ; and National Day.

An announcement of the cost of the tour will be made to the group 45-days prior to the start based on the number of registered members.

A deposit of $500 per person is required. This is fully refundable up to 45 days prior to the start of the tour. Submission of a deposit will guarantee your place on the tour. Balance is due at least 45 days prior to the beginning of the tour and payable by credit card, wire transfer, or personal check.
