This moderate to challenging 13 day cycle tour begins in Kunming, in Yunnan Province and ends in Chengdu, in Sichuan Province. This tour is intended for those with a fair amount of cycle-touring experience and will include days covering moderate distances and exhilerating mountain climbs. The tour will be vehicle-supported, meaning there will be a driver and a guide, and we will utilize the vehicle to carry luggage, supplies, and, when needed, riders and bicycles.

Some highlights included in this tour include a Tibetian Lamasery, Shangri La, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Lugu Lake, and an experience of rural Chinese culture and a food tour in Chengdu.

0 Kunming 0/0 Meet in Kunming one day prior to the start of the tour.
1 Kunming to Kunming 35/22 Meet group members, a brief city tour of Kunming - Yuantong Temple, East and West Pagodas, and Cuichu City Park.
2 Kunming to Shangri-La 77/48 Fly to Shangri-La (Zhongdian). Explore this Tibetian town with plenty of flavor including a visit to a Tibetian Lamasery.
3 Shangri-La to Tiger Leaping Gorge 49/31 Ride this sceniuc route to the back door of Tiger Leaping Gorge.
4 Tiger Leaping Gorge to Tiger Leaping Gorge 30/19 Visit Shangri-La, and the grasslands.
5 Tiger Leaping Gorge to Lijiang 80/50 Cycle down to the river valley past Jade Dragon Snow Mtn (5596m/18360ft) into Lijiang. Stay on the edge of the Ancient City and explore the quaint stone streets and historic arechitecture.
6 Lijiang to Lugu Lake 95/59 Cycle out of Lijiang in the morning and take transport part way northeast towards Lugu Lake. Finish the day cycling to the lake region, the home of the matriarchal Mosu minority, and across the Yunnan/Sichuan border.
7 Lugu Lake to Yanyuan 115/72 Finish circumnavigating Lugu Lake through the Sichuan portion of the region before enjoying a day-long decent into Yanyuan.
8 Yanyuan to Pingchuan 95/59 Ride the picturesque route through rolling low altitude mountain region on the way towards Xichang. Enjoy an evening in the small town of Pingchuan.
9 Pingchuan to Xichang 80/50 Cycle through the heart of the Yi minority to Xichang.
10 Xichang to Chengdu 20/13 Take transport to Chengdu. In the afternoon enjoy a food tour of Chengdu's famous "Small Eats."
11 Chengdu to Anren 58/36 Take transport to Dujiangyan and visit the centuries old irrigation system, built during the Warring States period, which supplies water to the Sichuan Basin. Continue on to Anren Ancient Town, visit museums and take in the legends that revived this small town.
12 Anren to Huanglongxi 65/41 Cycle through rural farmlands of the Sichuan basin into Shuangliu county. Huanglongxi is filled with gorgeous stone paved streets and ancient, wooden houses of this traditional village constructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
13 Huanglongxi to Chengdu 70/44 Return to Chengdu via a stretch of Shuangliu county's greenways and rural roads.

Group size: 4 - 8

Accommodations: Will be basic Chinese hotels generally of the 1-3 star variety. On occasion it may be necessary to use a 0-star hotel.  The prices are for double occupancy rooms, and will vary depending on the number of people who participate.

Single room supplement: $260

This tour is limited to no more than eight people. This will permit more flexibility in the program and allow more spontaneity for taking photos or exploring villages along the way.

Prices include the following:

1. All hotel accommodations (double occupancy) for 13 nights.
2. All meals eaten as group (private meals, snacks and alcoholic beverages are not included).
3. All group transportation costs (buses, boats, and taxis) including to/from the Beijing airport.
4. All group entrance fees.
5. Bicycle rental including helmet.
6. Bilingual cycling tour guide/mechanic.

This will be a vehicle-supported ride. This means that a vehicle will carry luggage between destinations (and cyclists when necessary).

If you decide to do something on your own, you will be responsible for those costs.

Cost: Prices depend on the total number of people going on the tour and the time of year. Below are the price per person (pp) and quoted in US dollars (US$) for non-holiday periods*:

An announcement of the cost of the tour will be made to the group 60-days prior to the start based on the number of registered members.

A deposit of $500 per person is required. This is fully refundable up to 60 days prior to the start of the tour. Submission of a deposit will guarantee your place on the tour. Balance is due at least 60 days prior to the beginning of the tour and payable by credit card, wire transfer, or personal check.
