Tour Route Map

This 8-day cycling tour begins in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province and ends in Zigong in southern Sichuan. This tour is designed as a moderate ride. Average daily cycling distance will be about 53 km or 33 miles. This will be a self-supported bicycle tour, meaning that each person will carry their own luggage in panniers on the bike. This tour will visit both well-known and little-known sights and will appeal to those who have cultural, social and geographical interests.

On the first day, the group will meet in Chengdu in the morning and take a leisurely tour of Chengdu visiting the River Viewing Pagoda, the Sichuan University Museum and visiting several restaurants and teahouses for some local culinary specialties.

Pandas On day two, the group will visit the Panda Breeding Research Base in the morning and Wenshu Monastary in the afternoon.  Later we will explore some of the Chengdu "hutongs" (small streets and alley with older style housing called "xiangs" in this area).

On the third day meet in the morning to transfer gear into panniers and cycle to Huanglongxi for lunch. This is a small village along a river with some old style architecture often used in period movies.  In the afternoon, we will cycle to Meishan where we will spend the night.

On day four , the group will cycle to Emeishan, one of China's four sacred mountains.  Here we will store the bike for a day and do some hiking up into the hill to see the monkeys and temples.

The sixth day we will cycle to Leshan in the afternoon to visit the Giant Buddha.

On day seven, we will cycle to Sanjiang for lunch and visit an abandoned white tower, later continuing onto Rongxian where a smaller Giant Buddha is.

On the last day, we will cycle to Zigong, home to dinosaur museum and an active salt mine musuem.  Here the buses run on uncompressed natural gas stored in giant black balloons on top of the buses.  This concludes the tour.
